UGM. A new PhD graduated from Kyoto was appointed to carry out a professional conference. He suggested to elevate it to be an international conference. Initially, his seniors were doubtful. But he insisted. Contacting the IEEE Indonesia Section a couple months ago, when I was just elected to be the Chairman; he asked whether the Section might help. But surely one of our programs this year is to support academics in Indonesia in professional activities, including organising IEEE sponsored conference with assured quality. Then we had a series of online discussion, focused on the requirements, etc. UGM submitted the conference proposal to the IEEE, and we approved it. The HQ needed a couple weeks to verify the proposal. But it went very well.

There is also something new with IEEE Indonesia Section. This year (2013) we will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the section. Coincidentally, for the first time, we are now carry out an election for Section Chair. In previous years, the candidates nominated by the Advisory Board and Excom would always automatically be a chairman with no challenge. But this year is different. So we will vote for next chairman. The first candidate, yours truly, is nominated by the Excom. The other candidate, Prof. Soegi, is the chairman of some joint chapters within the section. I plan to visit Malang on June 19th. Will provide an IEEE lecture on new convergence in my almamater: Brawijaya University. The term new convergence here refers to nth phase of digital convergence, in which we have to determine the position of IMS against SDP, SOA, Web 2.0, CDN of IPTV, etc. All digital IP-based network infrastructure and platform; yet without clear path of integration.
    Expecting a stormful discussion 🙂

The same night last week, I was crossing the South China Sea. I just attended the IEEE Region 10 Meeting (Asia-Pacific) on Mactan Island, Cebu, Philippines; and then lead my way to WICON (Wireless Technology Conference) in Singapore. The interesting things about Cebu Meeting are the commitment to reform, both the organisation of the IEEE and its approaches to the members and the community. IEEE will be redirected back as the professional organisation that focuses not only to the academic world. Technology will focus on ones that are relevant to the present and to humanity.
Unfortunately the transitions of the month and the country resulted to unattractive effect. Unusually, Singapore greeted me not very friendly. The arrogance of the academics was still felt. I was not complaining. But I realised there are works to do together. C’mon, let’s improve, enhance, and promote the organisation and our profession.

The IEEE Comsoc Lecture on 4G Technologies carried out in Bandung last weekend resulted in a moderate success. Considering the minimal {time|financial|human} resources we have, I would say it was more than expectation.
The next lecture will be conducted in Yogyakarta, scheduled on December 19th. It is not too late to offer your support. Contact me: mail@kun.co.ro :).

April edition of IEEE Communications explores deeper on LTE radio transceiving and network architecture. But it also reminds me that I have a homework to prepare a conference on 4G technologies (LTE vs WiMAX II). I’ll discuss it tomorrow in Bandung.

Speaking about IEEE, last week (March 5th) I’ve got a mail from the Comsoc. So, now, I’m officially the chairman of the IEEE Communications Society Indonesia Chapter. I guess I’d continue what the chapter has planned. A new initiative is conducting a kind of Faraday Lecture (like those conducted by the IET in the UK) for students in Indonesia. All the best for the profession, all the best for the country.

Exploring IEEE website (http://ieee.org), I was suggested to join The IEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology (SSIT). This society (http://ieeessit.org) puts its focus on such issues as environmental, health and safety implications of technology; engineering ethics and professional responsibility; history of electrotechnology; technical expertise and public policy; peace technology; and social issues related to energy, information technology and telecommunications. It publishes a quarterly journal, IEEE Technology and Society Magazine (http://ieeessit.org/technology_and_society/). Currently it has only 2000 members worldwide. So, should I join?

I just phased out the old domains of IEEE Indonesia section and IEEE Comsoc Indonesia chapter sites. Now we will use the new, shorter, more friendly domains. ewh.ieee.org/r10/indonesia is replaced by ieee.web.id, and ewh.ieee.org/r10/indonesia/com moved to komunikasi.org. The old domains are now redirected to the new domains.
