I was seriously reading a book on my Kindle, when suddenly an office mate denounced, “I never like ebooks. I like the sensation I felt when turning the book pages breathing their aroma.” This is certainly a stale statement without a new nor authentic idiom. I hear them too often. And no need to mention the statement to me either, before the character spent her time to see my book shelves (in both houses), plus some books that are still homeless off the shelf.
Surely, that character would also need to calculate: how many trees must be destroyed to accommodate my interest in reading that had never come down so far.

I blog this entry using my Amazon Kindle. This device is not optimised for browsing or even for making notes. I guess they put the keypad here just for searching function. Anyway, I bought this device only because of my passions to books and how I always want to be in touch with them. An iPad would be an overshoot.
This Kindle has accompanied me to a seminar trip in Hongkong. I saved a Wikitravel page here and used it as my travel guide. Some books have been loaded in it: my favourite books, new inspiring books, technical references, IEEE journals, some papers, etc. Too bad I cannot use it for writing; except blogging when I can reach a WiFi access.

A new book I read was The Economic Naturalist by Robert Frank. It helped me a bit when I overcame my last emotional crisis. It helped me reviewing human only as homo economicus who each time calculates for short term benefits only for oneself. It didn’t increment my detest level to humanity — I mean: how come? It only made me happy that everything I saw the last weeks were only normal phenomena. Certainly it also made the chaotic Fifth Symphony looked elegant.

For years, for me, Amazon means Amazon.co.uk. Or — mind you — Amazon.fr and Amazon.de for special books. Visits to Amazon.com are usually only for reference. But tonight I wanted to buy some old books. And they are not too available in any European Amazon. Delay time is above 10 days. So, I had no other choice than remember that Amazon.com also sells books
. OK, the transaction is now done, after editing some address (from West Java to Jakarta), Mastercard number, etc. Now, I’m waiting for my Godel, Escher, and Bach to arrive anytime.

Goenawan Mohamad’s oration was the peak of the launching inauguration of Politikana.com last night. My second visit to Salihara, I met cheerful & inspiring bloggers there. Also GM gave me a book he co-authored: Democrachy and Disappointment. What else? Picture takings, and some commitments to do. Great night.

I got a great book sent to me: The Phoenix Rises. About the right time too. A reminder that I’m still one of the coventrian phoenix. Any effort to destroy just make a new, brighter, stronger me. Coventry inspires, still.

On a dentist seat two weeks ago, I tried to reevaluate Prof Ian Stewart’s calculation of “Pig on a Rope” case. Proven that Prof’s calculation is wrong. The rope’s length should be around 60m instead of 90m as calculated on the book. The book, btw, is titled Cabinet of Mathematical Curiosities. And, btw, Prof Stewart lives in Coventry
